Touch typing practice

Practise without looking down. If you need to check where a key is, look at the on-screen keyboard rather than at your hands - it keeps your eyes where they need to be.

Practise in the right order

Random practice produces random improvement. The order that works is the same one any instrument teacher would recognise: isolate the movement, then use it in a small pattern, then in real material.

For typing that means: single key, then key combinations, then words containing those keys, then sentences, then continuous prose. Each rung keeps the same target, so the movement you just learned is immediately rehearsed in a harder context.

Fifteen minutes beats an hour

Motor learning consolidates between sessions, not during them. Fifteen focused minutes daily will beat a two-hour session at the weekend, reliably and by a wide margin.

Stop before you get sloppy. Practice done with degrading accuracy teaches the degraded version, which then has to be untrained.

What to do when you keep missing a key

Slow down until you stop missing it, even if that means typing at a fraction of your normal speed. The goal of a drill is a correct repetition, and a fast wrong repetition is worse than useless - it is active practice at getting it wrong.

Then rebuild the speed gradually. If the error comes back, you went too fast too soon.

Common questions

Should I look at the on-screen keyboard?

While you are learning a new key, yes - it is far better than looking at your hands, because your eyes stay on the screen where they belong. Turn it off once the key is reliable.

How do I know what to practise?

Take a one-minute test. The results show which keys and which letter pairs you actually missed, ranked by how much they cost you, and you can generate practice targeting exactly those.
